Detailed description (English): The Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems Lab-Technical University of Crete, as member of CIVITAS and CIVINET initiatives, organises -each year during the European Mobility Week- open air interactive labs, inviting citizens and tourists to learn, get inspired and share their opinion about sustainable mobility solutions. This year, citizens and visitors of Platanias, were actively engaged to a co-design process towards a sustainable, safe and accessible city (20-22 September, Town Square). Participants had the opportunity to share their views and priorities on the sustainable mobility planning taking place in the Municipality. By employing an interactive map and aiming to create safe conditions for active mobility, participants spotted high-risk areas for accidents and discussed appropriate measures for traffic calming, road safety and accessibility. Through a participatory exercise, they exchanged on how they visualise their city in 20 years, co-shaping the Platanias Vision for sustainable mobility.
Through a tailored app, users were able to calculate the carbon footprint of their daily routes and compare environmental and financial gains of choosing a more eco-friendly way to commute. They learnt about the positive impacts of active mobility in our physical and mental health. Finally, bus users took a tailored survey aimed at improving public transport services.
The 2021 Open-air Lab is integrated into the broader participatory approach followed for the SUMP of Municipality of Platanias, in the frame of European Commission’s Horizon2020 CIVITAS SUMP-PLUS project.
