Detailed description (English): A group of parents from school Ste Agnes decided to organise a campaign to raise awareness on the rules applicable in the street which had recently been redesigned - going from "normal" street to " shared space". Many drivers (residents, parents of pupils) were indeed not aware that in such a street specific rules applied and there were many complaints, not only from the pedestrians' side (feeling insecure to walk in this street) but also from the car drivers' side (unhappy to see pedestrian walking on the street).
For this reason, the parents prepared a leaflet explaining, in a visual way, the 3 main rules:
- speed should be limited to 20km/h,
- pedestrians are allowed and even encouraged to walk in the middle of the street (since there is not pedestrian way on a shared space),
- parking is only allowed in the predefined and marked spots.
The leaflet also presented other options to reduce the number of cars in the street by encouraging a walk of a few meters by using the available Kiss and Ride parking.
The document has been distributed to each family/kid (via the class-notebook of each pupil) and a A3 poster has been made and hanged on the external wall of the school.
A few weeks after, with the support of the local police, a group of pupils (of 12 years old) went in the street accompanied by a policeman to distribute good points to drivers respecting the rules and (fake) fines to the non-respectful drivers. The presence of kids had stronger impact on the drivers and kids enjoyed being able to explain the rules to the adults and giving them fines.
This campaign was supported by the implementation - by the commune- of some infrastructure in the street to improve safety of the pedestrians.
Target group(s): Drivers, parents, residents of the streets near the school
Objectives: Increase safety in the street, reduce speed, tackle dangerous crossing and spots in the streets, engage active and efficient dialogue with local authorities, launch a longer-term reflection on how to improve the street friendliness for soft modes users
Expected Outcomes: Commitment of the commune to fix dangerous points in the street.
Reduced speed of car drivers.
Decreased number of cars transiting in the street (but not monitoring, no figure of before/after)
Partner: Local police, Commune and other school in the same street (école communale du centre)
