Detailed description (English): Although municipalities often obtain an overview of locations where traffic accidents occur, it is important to have an overview of bottlenecks citizens experience when they are travelling. Accident rates give an impression of objective traffic safety, however, objectively seen, a location can be safe while people do not feel safe at all (and vice versa). By asking citizens to give an overview of bottlenecks they experience, an overview of subjective traffic safety is obtained. With this overview, it is possible to increase the subjective safety and motivate people to travel on a more sustainable way (e.g., by foot or bike instead of by car). It is known that the majority of parents bring their children to school by car because their children or themselves think the route to school is too dangerous for their children to travel in an autonomous way. Recent studies have indicated that 80% of the children between 6 and 14 years feels anxious in traffic. It is therefore very important to look through the eyes of (the parents of) a child.
For this reason, we created Route2School. With Route2School cities and schools will obtain an overview of the travel behaviour of children and bottlenecks they experience on their route to school for each participating municipality and school . The tool consists of a web application and is supported by a smartphone application (both Android and iPhone).
The digital school route maps will stay active and can be adapted on a permanent basis. To this end, the safety of the school environment can be recorded and can be kept up-to-date using the (digital) Route2School tools. Already more than 50 cities and 500 schools participated in Route2School. For more information, contact us at info@route2school.be
In addition to the Route2school product described above, we now also have a new and rich traffic safety education tool ready for use. Using this tool, we can train and teach children traffic safety, by using their own known local environment in the teaching material. The tool also makes use of gamification elements. These are unique assets of Route2school and will boost learning and awareness about traffic safety. For more information, you can also reach us at info@route2school.be
Target group(s): Childrens, parents, school representatives, city stakeholders, government representatives (ministers of mobility and transport), police, stakeholder groups (e.g. cycling organisations)
Objectives: -To increase traffic safety by creating awareness about bottlenecks and routes that parents and children feel unsafe about when they are travelling to school
-Create a digital school route map, that can be used for communicating about safe routes to school
-For the purpose of better traffic safety education, we will boost learning and create awareness about traffic safety by including the known local environments in the teaching material, using also gamification elements.
Expected Outcomes: -Route2school has been used in more than 50 cities in Flanders and in more than 500 schools already.
-It has been covered extensively in Flemish media (newspaper articles and national media)
-We are looking for more interesting (international) parties that want to try our product(s).
