Detailed description (English): A group of nine enthusiasts for sustainable urban mobility, called "Verkehrswende Leipzig", decided in May 2021 to join the European Mobility Week (EMW) in Leipzig. Leipzig in Germany closed during the EMW the 4 to 8 lane “Ring” (circle highway) round the city center for automobile traffic the first time for a whole day. “Verkehrswende Leipzig” decided to start a call for the world largest “Gehzeug”-procession.
A “Gehzeug” is an invention of Herman Knoflacher, a former Professor at the Institute for Transport Planning and Technology at the Vienna University of Technology. According to Knoflacher, the “Gehzeug” (“walkmobile”) allows people to visualize the irrationality of urban motor traffic and its excessive land consumption. (see: https://gruenlink.de/2ajg).
“Verkehrswende Leipzig” invited the people of Leipzig to be part of the largest “walkmobile”-procession ever. We did this via press (e.g. https://gruenlink.de/2ajh), social Media and face-to-face propaganda.
On September 19 we launched a program where people could build their own “walkmobile” at the Augustusplatz in the center of Leipzig near the Ring. At last we and the people of Leipzig build 106 “walkmobiles” within 3 hours.
The procession started at 3:30 PM and lasts for about 1 hour with a walking distance of almost 2 km. We had participants from small children to elderly people as you can see in this video (https://gruenlink.de/2aji) from minute 4:45.
The German word “Verkehrswende” means ecological traffic turn. “Verkehrswende Leipzig” is a project of Changing Cities e.V. Berlin.
Berlin.
Target group(s): The people of Leipzig, the press, other organisations for sustainable mobuility (to start a battle for the largest walkmobile-procession all over the world :-))
Objectives: Demonstration for better space management between the different sorts of mobility. Especially cars dominate and abuse the space in cities. the aim of the "Gezeug"-procession was to reclaim the streets for pedestrians, cylists or local puplic transport
