Detailed description (English): This action represents the first bike-to-work challenge for the whole European Commission, as an extension of the 2016 event at the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport and the European Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises.
During the month of May 2017, colleagues across the Commission will compete in teams or individually, challenging each other for the highest number of bicycle trips. The number of trips and kilometres is registered online, including trips involving participants' children.
The main objective is to promote the use of the bicycle as a healthy and sustainable mode of transport for commuting to work.
Two lunchtime conferences will be held on how to promote cycling (and other active or sustainable modes) in a staff mobility plan.
Eight training courses are also foreseen in different Brussels locations between April and September 2017, covering the theory (road safety principles, equipment, cycling infrastructure, etc.) and the practice of safe cycling (handling, position on the road, blind spots, etc).
Target group(s): European Commission staff
Objectives: To promote the use of the bicycle as a healthy and sustainable mode of transport for commuting to work
Expected Outcomes: More staff members will choose to cycle to work all year round
