Pedestrians get priority as work on a key enhancement scheme in Cathedral Yard is completed this Friday, Devon Car Free Day.

The joint Devon County and City Councils funded project has involved the complete re-paving of Cathedral Yard from South Street through to the Royal Clarence. High quality materials have replaced the old tarmac, using York stone slabs and porphyry paving stone.

The opportunity has been taken to close Broadgate entirely to traffic, as well as re-paving it to create a more attractive finish.

Pedestrians have priority throughout the area with kerbs removed and surfaces at the same level. Cathedral Yard will be virtually traffic free with vehicle access controlled between 10am and 4.30pm by a rising bollard. Servicing will take place outside those hours.

The changes have given a big boost to pavement cafes with two new cafes recently established and more anticipated next Spring.
