organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2006, taking into account the annual theme.

Mobility week 2006 has as its main focus the marketing of sustainable, environmentally friendly transport i the City of Bergen. Environmental damage shall be reduced, public transport improved and accessibility increased for both pedestrians and cyclists.
Public Transport Day will be arranged on the 16th of September where all of the public transport companies and .
A Mobility Conference will be arranged on the 21st of September with the theme ‿Environmentally friendly transport‿
Students at all elementary schools in Bergen have been invited to participate in a contest called ‿Bergen in Motion‿. Schools will compete on the basis of which school has the most students which cycle or walk to school.

Establishment of available facilities / infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians is a priority in Bergen. Pedestrian / bike paths or lanes have been established in 2006 from the city centre to different areas of the City. Vasekerelven, a street in the city centre has been rehabilitated with facilities for bicycles.
Bicycle parking facilities have been placed in the city centre. Bike route signage is now set up in Bergen. A new bicycle map, brochures and presentations via Internet have been created in connection with Mobility Week. For the past three years, bus fares have been frozen in Bergen and extra subsidies have been secured to increase frequency on certain trunk routes. Bybanen: Bergen Light Rail is now in final design and construction will begin soon.CNG – buses are used to a great extent, especially on routes near the city centre.
Car-free day
Bergen (City of Bergen)
carries out a Car-Free Day 2006 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.
Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
Bryggen – the historic wharf area of Bergen – is closed to traffic on Saturday, 14th of September between 12:00 - 15:00. Bryggen includes the historic Hanseatic constructions in the central harbour area and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bryggen has historically been an important and central area for trade in Norway. Bryggen is also a transportation hub for cruise ships and coastal ship services.Highway RV585 fronts the Bryggen area with two lanes and handles a large volume of traffic. The speed limit here has been reduced to 30km/h to reduce vibrations transmitted to the historical buildings.
