1.) Technical improvement of public transport fleet
a) Low-floor trams
Low-floor tram TMK 2200 is original Croatian product fully adapted to all groups of citizens (persons with disabilities, older people, mothers with pushchairs etc.) and meets the highest standards of quality. The basic characteristic of tram is low-floor (no stairs) and thus it is fully adapted to people with difficulties in movement, and allows a faster change of passengers. The length is 32 meters. It has a fully air-conditioned passenger and driving space. Maximum speed tram is 70 km / h. Inside there is room for 202 passengers, of which 46 seats.
Zagreb released into public transport 15 low-floor trams in 2008. Total number of low – floor trams in Zagreb is 86.
Until 2009 total number of 140 low-floor trams will be released into public transport network.
Currently, tram network extends to 120 km, with 15 daily 4 night tram lines.
b) Low-floor buses
Zagreb released into public transport 210 low-floor buses (most of it use gas or bio-diesel), and another 214 low-floor buses were purchased and will be available in next few years. All new low-floor buses will either use gas or bio-diesel.
c) School buses
In 2008 Zagreb released into transportation network 28 modern school buses.
d) Special vans for people and children with disabilities
In 2008 Zagreb released 7 special vans (totaly 17 special vans)
2.) Improvement and extension of the public transport services
According to the Agreement between the City of Zagreb, Croatian Railways and Zagreb Electric Tram (public transportation company), passengers use single ticket for bus, tram and train. Since 1992. number of passengers using railway increased 10 times. The City of Zagreb continuosly improves train stops.
3.) Investments in infrastructure for cycling and walking
In 2008 usage of bicycle in Zagreb increased by 4%. Whenever there is a street renovation, new bicycle lanes are created. The City of Zagreb has totaly 150 km of bicycle lanes.
4.) Various interventions, measures and activities related to the adjustment needs of persons with disabilities and people with difficulties in movement
All new public transport vehicles are fully accesible. Streets and crossings are fully adapted. Pavements for blind people have been installed.
5.) Free use of public transportation for various groups of citizens
Over 500.000 citizens use public transportation for free. Students, people over 65 years old, people with disabilities, unemployed, poor. Each year it is financed by the City budget.
6.) Increasing parking fees in the center and provide cheaper parking spaces at the edges
Zagreb has 3 zones of parking; green, yellow and red. The parking fees increased recently on 2,2 EUR/hour in red zone, 1,1 EUR/hour in yellow zone and 0,60 EUR in green zone. Also, the maximum parking time reduced on 1 hour in red zone, 2 hours in yellow and 3 hours in green zone.
7.) Closing down the 'old town' for traffic and parking
Parking and traffic will be allowed for tenants only. Traffic decreased 60%.
8) In 2008 50 new children playgrounds were built, and next year another 160 will be built.
9) In 2008 new pedestrian walkway has been built along the river coast (4 km)
10) The city of Zagreb more than 40 years systematically monitors the quality of air in line with the European and domestic legislative and recent scientific findings. Network for monitoring air quality in the area of the City of Zagreb makes six local and three state measuring stations, and air quality data are continuously published. Three of them are inside of GEMS/AIR program. Based on monitoring and measurement, each year the city areas are categorizated according to air pollution. According to data from air quality monitoring most areas has been classified in category I pollution, few of them part II category, and at two locations is determined III category of pollution.
11) Program of protection and improving the quality of air in the City of Zagreb for the period 2008. to 2012. is currently in the process of verification throughout all city departments. The program is based on the results of measurements, urban planning documentation, scientific, experience and legal criteria. It contains strategic goals, measures, activities and obligations of all participants and time framework.
