Almada organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2009, taking into account the annual theme.

Almada implements one or more new permanent measure(s), which contribute(s) to modal transfer from private car to environmentally sound means of transport.

- Urban Renovation and implementation of traffic calming measures in Feijó’s Car Free Day area;

- Renovation of street landscaping and containers Feijó’s area;

- Installation of new shelters in BUS stops;

- Creation of a Pedibus serving local schools involved in the project Children’s Agenda 21 of Almada;

- Establishment of a rent-a-bike system between Trafaria and Costa da Caparica, as result of a partnership between City Council, the Local Energy Management Agency of Almada and Transtejo, the local boat operator – permanent measure supported by the European project PIMMS Transfer;

- Development of a new Cycle lane between Sobreda and Monte da Caparica;

- Edition of the animated film “Earth Friendly Mobility”, developed during the Almada’s Children’s Agenda 21 project;

- Tendering of mini-electrical buses, FLEXIBUS, soon to run in the city centre of Almada, creating a new urban flexible transport service – service study supported by the European project FLIPPER;

- Development of the leaflet “MST in the city: only a few minutes to reach everything”, presenting the best pedestrian paths between the local tram (MST) stops and the main facilities they serve;

- Conception of the” Electric Mobility Municipal Plan” and installation of recharge spots for electrical vehicles;

- Presentation of the electronic version of “Almada’s Public Transport Guide”;

- Development of an Air Quality Monitoring Campaign in Almada;

- Edition of the music single “Caparica’s Sun by bike” by the Portuguese rock band Peste & Sida, associated to the new cycle lane connecting Trafaria to Costa da Caparica;

- Development of the Project “Bicla Tejo: from Belém to the Caparica Sun in my bike”, that includes an hybrid cycling itinerary (cycle lane + boat), different actions to promote and divulge the project, and the installation of bicycle parking facilities and information signs.

Car-free day Car-free day

Almada carries out a Car-Free Day 2009 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
One of the main pillars of the strategy of implemmenting EMW and CFD in Almada is the effort to reach local communities by moving the event annually to a new borough.
In 2004, Almada started a policy of itineration of the campaign through different Boroughs, as a way to expand the spirit of the initiative, and contribute to a better mobility in different areas of the municipality.
