Città Metropolitana di Cagliari organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2014, taking into account the annual theme.

All week
The municipality of Cagliari has long tried to improve living conditions in the city through the development of its urban road network, so to make it more in line with the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Currently, the municipality is involved in:
The extension of its light rail system to connect the two hubs of “Piazza Repubblica” and “Piazza Matteotti” (with this latter one representing the main terminal in Sardinia).
The improvement and extension of its stone paved historic streets, many of which contain some of the most significant city’s art treasures.
The realization of feasibility studies for the creation/extension of green ways along the Poetto’s seaside promenade.
The adoption of a policy based on small, continuous, improvements in the city’s road network.
The environmental movement "Patto dei Sindaci", which has recently approved an “Action Plan for the Sustainable Energy” (APSE) containing a list of strategies to adopt to reach a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020, as well as advocating policies for sustainable mobility.

Activities scheduled for the European week of Sustainable Mobility 2014:
Road safety courses for primary schools pupils. These courses, designed to help pedestrians and cyclists, as well as promoting public transport, are organized in partnership with the city’s traffic officers and CTM. Relaunch of the LPEEH project (Love, People, Ecology, Education, Health) designed to promote and organize kids’ home-to-school travels by foot, bicycle, push scooter or other similar transport means.
Information points located around the city to provide information related to environmental issues, sustainable mobility, cyclists’ safety, public transport and so on.
“Bike to work and bike to school” - Positioning of 3 gazebos along Cagliari’s main streets to assess how many people cycle to work or school.
"Conference: Traffic and health" - Data on air pollution and its effects on health ( in partnership with Legambiente). Presentation of the main results of the project "Imparis", designed to provide school pupils with a car pooling service.
"Achille Trophy" - Contest between different vehicles designed to promote the creation of an integrated public transport system in the metropolitan area of Cagliari.
"A walk in the historic neighbourhood of Lapola" - Cultural itinerary among the Pisan walls and the fifth-century fortifications in the port of Cagliari and the historic commercial neighbourhood of Bagnomaria/Lapola (in partnership with Legambiente)
"Bike and ice cream" - Weekly summer bike trail to the several traditional ice-cream parlours in the city.
"Safe bike" - Online listing and registration of the bikes in the Italian Registry of Bikes, promotion of deterrent policies designed to prevent bike theft.
"The car….just when we really need it. The hows and whys of car sharing in Cagliari" - Training session designed to inform the citizens about the correct use of the car sharing services available in Cagliari.
"Third edition of the Health Bike Ride" - Bike ride in the city for adults and kids.
"The endless city – When the outskirts become the city" - Project started to engage citizens in reading and the arts within urban contexts, CTM’s buses and bus shelters. Readings and plays will be organized with the presence of actors and musicians.
"Metropolitan parade" - A traveling play will take place along an historic street in the city centre, with the aim to promote the arts within urban contexts.
“On board music” - A professional string quartet will play classical music on board of the new CTM’s trolleys.
“Video context” - A short film will be made by IED students to promote the 2014 edition of the European Week of Sustainable Mobility and of the Alig’Art Festival. The best short will receive an award, with the awards ceremony to be held during the European Week of Sustainable Mobility. The winning short will be broadcasted on CTM’s buses.
"International Meeting: Smart City" - An international meeting on sustainable mobility and public transport is scheduled. Alain Flausch (Secretary General of the International Association of Public Transport), several institutional delegates and Local Public Transport decision makers will attend the meeting.

Città Metropolitana di Cagliari implements one or more new permanent measure(s), which contribute(s) to modal transfer from private car to environmentally sound means of transport.

Pedestrianisation
22 September: Piazza Palazzo, among the most beautiful and ancient squares in Sardinia (part of the historic neighbourhood of Castello) will be closed to traffic and pedestrianized.

Launch of the car sharing service, with 5 car sharing stations located nearby the “Mercato Civico di San Benedetto”, “Piazza Garibaldi” and “Piazza Repubblica”, “Via Sonnino” and “Via Crispi” (the latter one very close to the Municipal Building of Cagliari). Car fleet: 10 cars, with more vehicles expected to be purchased in the near future. Info are available at www.playcar.net.
Widespread availability of the bike sharing service, with 10 bike stations located within the city area. The bike fleet consists of 105 bikes, 35 of which are pedal-assisted.
Permanent pedestrianization of the “Piazza Palazzo”, in the historic neighbourhood of Castello.
Opening of new cycling lanes.
Upgrade of the cycling network (new cycling lanes, improvement and renovation of old ones, new road sign, new bike racks).
Creation of new reserved lanes for buses and trolleys. Improvement of the cycling system for private citizens (new bike parkings, lockers, racks).
Feasibility studies for the extension/creation of a green way along the Poetto’s seaside promenade.
Elimination of architectural barriers.
Creation of wheelchair ramps.
Pavements lowering.
Building of new pavements in areas lacking these facilities.
Improvement of road infrastructures (pavements, crosswalks and so on).
Development and use of audio-visual devices at traffic lights (countdown for pedestrian crossings).
Traffic calming systems in areas nearby schools by the end of 2014.

The use of environmentally friendly buses and trolleys in public transport.
Launch of integrated services for different public transport modes.
Upgrade and expansion of the public transport network (creation of High Occupancy Vehicle lanes dedicated to public transport, new bus stops, new routes, reserved areas and so forth).
Launch of public awareness campaigns.

The adoption of new technologies to enhance the use of public transport:
- Development of a software called Busfinder for Ios and Android, with over 40.000 downloads as of 2014. The software provides real time info on public transport, calculates the optimal route, finds the nearby bus stops on a map, provides info on the closest tickets selling points.
- Use of the app developed by Banca Sella for the on line purchase of bus tickets (at no extra costs).
-The further upgrade of Busfinder, decided to increase the existing ticketing services and the sharing of information among bus users;
- Large scale use of the available social networks to communicate with CTM’s users. Currently CTM is followed by over 22.000 people on Facebook and is increasingly popular on Twitter, Instagram and Youtube. Info to users are provided through 300 electronic bus stops distributed in the metropolitan area, besides an Interactive Voice Response system and a SMS system able to calculate the optimal route, provide info on real time arrivals at selected bus stops and info on the closest bus tickets selling points.
- The development of Intelligent Transportation Systems and info-mobility tools with the aim to build a Smart City in the metropolitan area of Cagliari;
-The promotion of fare integration programs with other public transport operators, so to guarantee integrated services among different transport modes;
-A long term strategy for the improvement of the existing public transport network, also through the introduction of Bus Rapid Transit services for fast growing areas;
- The introduction of Demand Responsive Transport Services for low demand areas, so to improve the accessibility to and from the Cagliari’s suburbs;
-The creation of small intermodal transport interchange areas, so to increase the comfort of users and promote modal shift phenomena from private to public transport;
-The devise of sustainable mobility awareness campaigns, particularly for the promotion of public transport;

Car-free day Car-free day

Città Metropolitana di Cagliari carries out a Car-Free Day 2014 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.
