Activities within the week Activities within the week

London Borough of Hackney (London) organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2014, taking into account the annual theme.

All week
Hackney Council are organising a full week programme of events and publicity of initiatives designed to reduce traffic congestion and to make it easier for more people to get around the borough by walking, cycling or public transport. The week includes the launch of the second year of the EU funded STARS project for schools to increase the number of students cycling to school.

Hackney Council are also consulting on a ten year Transport Strategy to improve and want to hear from residents: hackney.gov.uk/consultation

On Saturday 27th September, Mare Street, the main shopping street in Hackney Central, will be host to an event to celebrate Car Free Day

Hackney Council has already closed the road to motorised traffic. We hope that by filling it with activity we will help everyone to see how streets can work better for people on foot.

Car-free day Car-free day

London Borough of Hackney (London) carries out a Car-Free Day 2014 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
The Narrowway is an historic section of Mare St in Hackney Central. It is the historic high street with shop frontages on both sides. The section closed is from the junction with Amhurst Rd, to the junction with Dalston Lane, a section of about 160 metres.

Previously, this was a one way street that was filled with buses. Buses have been re-direct from the street so that it can be pedestrian and cyclist only. This allows the street to be 2 way for cyclists, where it was only one way previously and cyclists had a lengthy detour when travelling north.
