Car-free day
Washington D.C. metropolitan area carries out a Car-Free Day 2016 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.
Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
Citizens of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area are encouraged to "Change things up, go car free or go car-lite by ridesharing on Sept. 22." Citizens are asked to 'take the free pledge' and to explore 'commuter connections' and join a "'team' that fits their mobility best and get social" via #carfreeday and @CarFreeMetroDC. Options include 'team bike;' 'team pool;' 'team rail;' 'team telework;' 'team bus' and 'team walk.' The overall aim is to diminish the number of cars on the D.C. area's roads.
