Heraklion (HΡΑΚΛΕΙΟ) organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2023, taking into account the annual theme.

20 September
Cycling around the historic City Center. Heraklion historic name was Candia-the Great Castle.
'On my bike in the neighborhoods of the Great Castle!'
Mrs. Beteinaki, author of the book "With my bike in the neighborhoods of the Great Castle" will lead us on a bike route and show points of interest in the city however from a different perspective! Historic moments, historic routes, and landmarks will come to life!
21 September
1. After the success of last year's implementation of the cycling bus, we will organize two cycling bus activities in the primary schools of Akadimia and Talos. Two of the most crowded schools in the city of Heraklion will change their mobility habits. All pupils will meet at neighboring meeting points and will bike to school.
When they reach their school ... another activity will take place.
2. The local traffic police department will play with the kids and organize workshops for traffic safety.
3. Kids will also do handcrafts with recyclable materials.
22 September
Another day of cycling bus and traffic education activities. Road closures will be implemented in the streets surrounding the two schools. 1. cycling bus and 2. traffic education.

3. Moreover the kids will create small toys with recyclable materials with the theme of the EMW.

4. During the evening kids will be gathered at a new local park and various activities will be organized there: a) Skateboarding experts will show tricks and teach kids how to skate, b) 'Save energy' - a new theatrical play will be presented with a lot of improvisation under the theme of EMW. c) 'Pantomime- what would you do...' - pantomime plays with the kids under the theme of EMW... All acts will start with the question: What would you do if.... ??
There will also be memory games, ball games, and drawings for children.

Heraklion (HΡΑΚΛΕΙΟ) implements one or more new permanent measure(s), which contribute(s) to modal transfer from private car to environmentally sound means of transport.

New or improved bicycle facilities

Further info
During the week we will implement new zebra crossings in the streets surrounding the two central schools and improve the existing ones. Moreover, we will improve 5+ wheelchair ramps (school surroundings) and bike parking facilities in the schoolyards.
The mini-bus service will increase its frequency as a pilot service during the week and assess whether this will remain a permanent measure.

Car-free day Car-free day

Heraklion (HΡΑΚΛΕΙΟ) carries out a Car-Free Day 2023 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
streets surrounding the schools of Talos and Academia. The exact street sections will be decided shortly
