Detailed description (English): The main means of transport in the Netherlands is the private car. This is responsible for 70% of the kilometers traveled and 43% of all journeys. In the Netherlands alone, there are 9 million private cars that take up a large part of the public space. When these cars are not stuck in traffic, they are keeping parking lots occupied. Our current society is almost entirely set up for cars instead of for people. We, car sharing company "Greenwheels" and NGO the Lab Of Thought, disagree with that. How great would it be if the street were for everyone again, and not just for the motorist? To gain insight into how the street can be used for better things, The Lab of Thought has developed a mini pick up truck with the help of sponsor Greenwheels: the Punk Parklet. This is not an ordinary car, but a social hub that transforms into a hangout. This smart car meets the requirements to be allowed to park in a parking space, but adds something to the public space instead of occupying it. With its innovative design, the Punk Parklet encourages social interaction and contributes to a lively neighbourhood. In this way, the street becomes a meeting place again where children can play, neighbours can socialise and young and old can meet each other.
We tour around the Netherlands in September and will be at four different locations: Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Nijmegen and Eindhoven.
Detailed description (original language): Het voornaamste vervoermiddel in Nederland is de privéauto. Deze is verantwoordelijk voor 70% van de afgelegde kilometers en 43% van alle verplaatsingen . En alleen al in Nederland bezit men 9 miljoen privéauto’s die een groot deel van de publieke ruimte innemen. Want wanneer deze auto’s niet vaststaan in de file, staan ze stil op parkeerplaatsen. Onze huidige samenleving is vrijwel volledig ingericht voor auto’s in plaats van voor mensen. En daar zijn wij, Greenwheels en de Lab Of Thought, het niet mee eens. Want hoe mooi zou het zijn als de straat weer van iedereen is, en niet enkel van de automobilist? Om inzichtelijk te maken hoe de straat (weer) benut kan worden voor leukere dingen, heeft The Lab of Thought met behulp van sponsor Greenwheels een auto ontwikkeld: de Punk Parklet. Dit is geen gewone auto, maar een sociale hub die transformeert in een hangout, pingpong- of picknicktafel. Het slimme autootje voldoet aan de vereisten om op een parkeerplek te mogen staan, maar voegt iets toe aan de publieke ruimte in plaats van dat het deze inneemt. Met het innovatieve ontwerp moedigt de Punk Parklet sociale interactie aan en draagt het bij aan een levendige buurt. Zo wordt de straat weer een ontmoetingsplek waar kinderen kunnen spelen en jong en oud elkaar kan ontmoeten.
De Punk Parklet gaat op Roadshow door Nederland en doet in september 4 verschillende locaties aan in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Nijmegen en Eindhoven.
