Detailed description (English): During European Mobility Week 2024, on September 18, a workshop intends to raise awareness among students, university staff, and the public about the benefits of integrating active travel into daily routines. The workshop will emphasize how sustainable and inclusive neighborhoods facilitate active travel—alone for short distances and in combination with public transport for longer distances—while reducing traffic congestion, improving road safety, and decreasing air pollution, all contributing to a better quality of life. The importance of physical activity, especially walking and cycling, along with healthy habits such as regular exercise and a balanced diet, will also be highlighted as key to enhancing overall health and well-being.
The session will include presentations of findings from laboratory results conducted at the Faculty of Sports Sciences and Physical Education, as well as data from a survey conducted as part of a PhD thesis. It will begin with a theoretical presentation at Polo2, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Coimbra. Participants will then complete the survey, followed by a discussion to evaluate the results, and identify areas for improvement.
Target group(s): • Students (Civil Engineering and related fields)
• Professors (Teaching and research staff)
• University staff (Administrative and support staff)
• Individuals with an interest who may learn about the action through various means at the university
Objectives: Promote active travel, such as walking and cycling, as part of daily routines. By encouraging these healthy habits, along with a balanced diet and regular exercise, we aim to significantly improve overall health and well-being. Adopting these behaviors not only enhances quality of life but also helps address climate change by reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability. The initiative will raise awareness of the health benefits of physical activity using lab results from the Faculty of Sports Sciences and Physical Education. Additionally, it will involve the community through a survey to collect insights on local neighborhoods and the factors that motivate people to engage in more active travel. This information will be valuable for decision-makers, providing them with a clearer understanding of the issues and helping to develop effective solutions to promote and support active travel in the community.
Partner: This survey results from a colaboration between the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Sports at the University of Coimbra. It is promoted by the Sustainable Campus Committee at the Efs - University of Coimbra (https://www.uc.pt/en/efs).
