Detailed description (English): The University of the Aegean actively participates in European Mobility Week, aiming to strengthen sustainable mobility and raise awareness among the academic community and the wider public.
University staff and students can benefit from the use of shared electric bicycles in Mytilene, Lemnos, Chios, and Karlovasi (Samos). In Syros and Rhodes, conventional shared bicycle systems are in operation. The use of shared bicycles offers multiple benefits to a city, both in terms of sustainable mobility and social and economic impact.
Shared bicycles contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions, lowering noise pollution, easing traffic congestion, increasing flexibility in movement, improving public health, and ensuring accessibility for all—regardless of income or vehicle ownership.
The University of the Aegean will take part in events organized by the “Lesvos Cycling Club,” including participation in the conference “Cycling Tourism and Mountain Biking: The Case of the Municipality of Mytilene and Lesvos” on Monday, September 15, 2025. The university encourages its academic community to attend other activities organized by the Lesvos Cycling Club, as well as similar events across all islands.
The University of the Aegean also promotes the use of public transportation (buses). Free bus access for students in the city of Mytilene will be extended to all university staff (academic and administrative) during European Mobility Week, from September 16 to 22, 2025, with routes to and from the University Hill. The goal is to make this measure permanent throughout the year.
Target group(s): students, academics, personnel, society
