Detailed description (English): Naujoji Vilnia, with around 30,000 residents, historically a separate town, is now part of Vilnius. It is rapidly developing and attractive for future expansion along the railway and the impressive Vilnia River valley. Naujoji Vilnia faces challenges like insufficient public transport integration, lack of cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, and heavy transit traffic through main streets due to the lack of a bypass, causing air pollution and noise. The “Sustainable Mobility Forum. Naujoji Vilnia 2024” project seeks to address these issues through dialogue between the community, government, and institutions.
The main idea is the "Three Municipalities Railway", connecting Vilnius, Vilnius District, and Trakai District. Naujoji Vilnia, the largest settlement along this line (outside Vilnius), is promoting better train integration into the city’s public transport system.
Activities include analyzing the current mobility situation, assessing infrastructure, traffic safety, and environmental impact, along with creative workshops to improve public transport, pedestrian, and cycling infrastructure. The cycling workshops are crucial, as the area has only 100 meters of cycling path, and safe pedestrian infrastructure is also lacking.
The project will culminate in a main forum, where workshop results will be presented, and a joint action plan for the community, government, and other institutions will be developed.
Target group(s): The main target groups and beneficiaries of our MOBILITYACTION are:
Residents of Naujoji Vilnia – especially those affected by insufficient public transport, cycling, and pedestrian infrastructure. This includes daily commuters, cyclists, pedestrians, and families seeking safer streets and better mobility options.
Local authorities and institutions – who will benefit from community input, expert advice, and collaborative solutions to improve the sustainable mobility network in the area.
The wider Vilnius region – as improved transportation infrastructure, particularly through the "Three Municipalities Railway," will enhance connectivity and offer better public transport options for commuters from surrounding districts (Vilnius District and Trakai District).
These groups will benefit from the project’s activities, including workshops, forums, and the resulting action plan that addresses sustainable mobility improvements in Naujoji Vilnia.
Objectives: Improve public transport integration – To better connect Naujoji Vilnia with Vilnius and surrounding areas by enhancing public transport options, particularly through the integration of the "Three Municipalities Railway" into the city's transport system.
Enhance cycling and pedestrian infrastructure – To address the lack of safe and adequate cycling and pedestrian infrastructure by developing plans for new paths, reducing car dominance, and improving safety for non-motorized transport users.
Engage the community in mobility solutions – To foster dialogue between local residents, authorities, and institutions through workshops and forums, encouraging active participation in decision-making and promoting sustainable mobility solutions.
Reduce transit truck traffic impacts – To develop solutions for minimizing the effects of heavy truck traffic through residential areas by exploring bypass options and improving traffic management, thus reducing air pollution and noise.
