Detailed description (English): Our project, "Athens Road History," addresses a twofold challenge: the historical significance of Athens' street names and the mobility challenges faced by visually impaired individuals. Our students recognized that while streets are rich with history, they can be difficult to navigate for those with visual impairments. This inspired them to create a solution that bridges this gap.
Throughout the 2024-2025 school year, we've implemented an Environmental Programme focused on increasing awareness and fostering empathy. Students researched the history behind significant street names in central Athens and created a publicly accessible website, "Athens Road History" (https://athensroadshistory.nextapps.store/), that is also accessible to the visually impaired.
To better understand the needs of the visually impaired, our students interviewed people with visual problems and visited the "Lighthouse from the blind of Greece." This invaluable experience led them to design and 3D-print street labels using the Braille system.
Our goal is to collaborate with the Municipality of Athens to install these labels throughout the city, providing a practical solution to increase the mobility and independence of visually impaired citizens and visitors. This initiative not only helped our students develop empathy and critical thinking skills but also earned our program the Silver Education Leaders Award.
Detailed description (original language): Το περιβαλλοντικό μας πρόγραμμα, "Αγγίζοντας τους δρόμους και την ιστορία της πόλης", αντιμετωπίζει μία διπλή πρόκληση: την ιστορική σημασία των ονομάτων των δρόμων της Αθήνας και ταυτόχρονα τις δυσκολίες μετακίνησης των ατόμων με προβλήματα όρασης. Οι μαθητές μας συνειδητοποίησαν ότι ενώ οι δρόμοι είναι πλούσιοι σε ιστορία, μπορούν να είναι δύσκολοι στην πλοήγηση για άτομα με οπτική αναπηρία. Αυτό τους ενέπνευσε να δημιουργήσουν μια λύση που γεφυρώνει αυτό το χάσμα.
Κατά τη σχολική χρονιά 2024-2025, εφαρμόσαμε ένα Περιβαλλοντικό Πρόγραμμα με στόχο την ευαισθητοποίηση και την ενσυναίσθηση. Οι μαθητές μας ερεύνησαν την ιστορία πίσω από σημαντικά ονόματα δρόμων στο κέντρο της Αθήνας και δημιούργησαν τον ιστότοπο "Athens Road History" (https://athensroadshistory.nextapps.store/), ο οποίος είναι προσβάσιμος και σε άτομα με προβλήματα όρασης.
Για να κατανοήσουν καλύτερα τις ανάγκες αυτής της ομάδας, οι μαθητές μας πήραν συνεντεύξεις από άτομα με προβλήματα όρασης και επισκέφθηκαν τον "Φάρο Τυφλών της Ελλάδος". Αυτή η πολύτιμη εμπειρία τους οδήγησε στο να σχεδιάσουν και να εκτυπώσουν σε 3D εκτυπωτή πινακίδες δρόμων με το σύστημα Braille.
Αυτή η πρωτοβουλία όχι μόνο βοήθησε τους μαθητές μας να αναπτύξουν ενσυναίσθηση και κριτική σκέψη, αλλά επίσης έλαβε το Silver Education Leaders Award.
Ελπίζουμε, σε συνεργασία με τον Δήμο Αθηναίων, να τοποθετηθούν αυτές οι πινακίδες στην πόλη, προσφέροντας μια πρακτική λύση για την αύξηση της κινητικότητας και της ανεξαρτησίας των ατόμων με προβλήματα όρασης, πολιτών και επισκεπτών.
