Detailed description (English): The healthcare sector is responsible for approx. 7 percent of the overall Austrian carbon foot-print. The healthcare sector therefore represents an area in urgent need of action. Research and experience show, that those responsible for healthcare facilities are interested and willing to implement measures but there is often a lack of information and practical assistance how to implement energy and resource efficiency as well as climate mitigation measures.
In the frame of the project “Climate friendly health care facilities”, the healthcare facilities develop and implement a climate action plan with goals and measures supported by experts in the field of climate and health consulting. During the implementation phase, the healthcare facility is supported by the consultants. The status of implementation of the climate action plan is evaluated after one year by the external experts.
The project is unique in its approach and aims to support healthcare facilities in becoming climate- friendly in all areas of climate change mitigation from one single source: Therefore the action plans cover buildings, energy, green areas, mobility, purchasing, resource and waste management, food system, etc.).
Thus, in the frame of the project, a variety of mobility measures were developed by the participating health care facilities, such as promoting active mobility, providing bicycle and e-charging infrastructure or developing mobility concepts. Many of the facilities also took part in European Mobility Week and promoted and informed about the measures defined in the climate action plans.
Target group(s): Main target groups of the Mobility Action are the health care facilities participating in the project “climate friendly health care facilities”, their employees, patients, customers and visitors.
Objectives: Many of the facilities also took part in European Mobility Week and promoted and informed about the measures defined in the climate action plans with a focus on active mobility.
Partner: More than 300 health care facilities participating in the project “Climate friendly health care facilities”: 77 hospitals, 57 senior/nursing facilities, 11 outpatient clinics, 6 primary care units, 60 medical practices and 34 pharmacies.
