Detailed description (English): World PLEV (Personal Light Electric Vehicle) Day
AUMP association, with the Spanish PLEV Federation (FEVEMP)— which is made up of several national associations—,
alongside all PLEV users, both in Spain and around the globe, join forces on July 10 to celebrate “World
PLEV Day”, an initiative started by the platform “I Wheel Survive” to assert the use of PLEVs as a
sustainable and environmentally friendly means of transportation.
For years society has been evolving towards a more global awareness where, with the future of the
planet in mind, environmental issues and sustainability have become vital considerations. Twentieth-
century mobility paradigms need to be replaced, and this can be done by making good use of the
technological innovations brought by the twenty-first century in terms of emission reduction, use of
natural resources and overall quality of life. We firmly believe that PLEVs are an excellent tool that
allows people to contribute, on an individual basis, to making a better world. Nonetheless, institutional
support is fundamental if we want to attain this collectively beneficial goal.
This change will not be immediate, but rather intergenerational, so it is time to start taking the first
steps so that the generations to come won’t be affected by our environmental inaction. Now is the time
to take action to bring about (and leave behind us) a better world, and changes need to start with
cities, which are the planet’s pollution hotspots. That’s where means of transportation such as PLEVs
can play a pivotal role.
We believe that the proverbial “less is more” makes perfect sense in this context: less traffic, less
pollution and less risk of serious injury provide for more safety, more energy-saving, more efficiency
and better quality of life. While the goal is the same—to transport people from one place to another—,
we firmly believe that there’s a better alternative to the current transportation model. To achieve this
we need common regulations that help all parties involved better understand and respect each other’s
mobility habits and requirements.
Society has unequivocally seen the benefits of PLEVs and opted for this type of mobility. Nonetheless,
the detrimental and outdated prioritization of internal combustion vehicles for daily urban
transportation results in large amounts of avoidable noise and pollution that, at this moment in time,
are difficult to stand behind. What’s more, most of these urban commutes and short trips are
performed by a single user, which has led to massive traffic congestion, air pollution and health-
related problems. More sustainable means of transportation could and should replace internal
combustion vehicles for many of these trips. A great number of users have already started using PLEVs
as the powerful tool they are in terms of making our daily commutes more sustainable. Bit by bit,
we’re all starting to contribute to the common goal of reducing the harmful emissions released into the
environment.
This is a global challenge: fighting climate change requires coordinated efforts by the entire
international community; all countries need to take urgent action while creating awareness of the need
to protect our most valuable resource—the planet we live on.
PLEVs have 1% of the impact of a car in terms of energy use, cost-per-mile, harmful
emissions and risk of injury.
PLEVs are ideal for trips of up to 20 km (12 miles), which can take a load off of an improve the
efficiency of public transportation.
PLEVs can be used by people of any age regardless of their physical condition.
PLEVs can be easily regulated by simply equating them to bicycles.
PLEVs are compatible and can be combined with public transportation for medium-distance
trips.
In view of the above, the Spanish PLEV Federation (FEVEMP)— comprised of a number of different
associations—, alongside all PLEV users in Spain and around the globe and the platform “I Wheel
Survive”, request the United Nations to approve July 10 as World PLEV Day for the purpose of
promoting, on an international level, the use of sustainable and environmentally friendly personal
means of transportation, especially for daily trips and commutes in large cities, where PLEVs provide
a viable solution to decongest current, disproportionate traffic levels.
