Lisbon and Lindau celebrated in new EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK videos

3 July 2019

Two new videos have been launched showcasing the sustainable mobility activities of the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK award winners for 2018. The videos were filmed on location in Lisbon (Portugal) and Lindau (Germany) and feature interviews with key mobility experts within the municipalities.

The videos outline how the award-winning cities are working to make sustainable mobility the number one choice for citizens in their cities.

Miguel Gaspar, Deputy Mayor for Mobility and Safety in Lisbon, highlights how mobility in the Portuguese capital has changed over the last 10 years and underscores the importance of cities working together to share ideas and support one another in tackling global challenges.

Head of Mobility with the City of Lindau, Kai Kattau, outlines how Lindau’s sustainable mobility work is guided by four objectives: to enhance and improve accessibility between different districts in the city, to reduce environmental pollution, to strengthen environmental conservation, and to improve traffic management.

Through these videos, viewers are granted a look at the innovative activities and measures that led these cities to success at the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Awards ceremony.

EU mobility community invited to give feedback on draft of revised SUMP Guidelines

19 June 2019

European mobility stakeholders – the draft second edition of the European SUMP Guidelines is now available to read and download!

The document was launched during the opening plenary of the 6th EU Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan Conference in Groningen (The Netherlands), alongside a wide array of SUMP-related topic guides.

Some of the topics covered include shared mobility, cycling, walking and health and the guides explore how these topics and many more can be supported and integrated into SUMP plans.

This comprehensive revision of one of the EU’s most important mobility planning documents marks a milestone in EU mobility policy.

The update aims to reflect the dynamic developments that have occurred in many areas of urban mobility, and integrate the rich experiences from SUMP implementation that have been acquired since the publication of the first Guidelines in 2013.

Europe’s sustainable mobility community is now invited to provide their feedback on the main Guidelines via the online form here by 9 July 2019.

In addition, feedback can be provided to individual Topic Guide and Practitioner Briefing authors by clicking through the tabulated table on the main Guidelines page. The deadline to give comments on these documents is also 9 July 2019.

Call for applications for 8th SUMP Award opens

17 June 2019

The eighth edition of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP) Award was launched today at the 6th European Conference on Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans, which is taking place in Groningen (The Netherlands).

This year's award will focus on the inclusion of safe, active mobility in sustainable urban mobility planning (SUMP). This covers the development and promotion of walking and cycling as urban transport modes and the improvement of safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

The topical focus is based on this year's EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK theme, which puts the spotlight on safe walking and cycling and the benefits it can have for our health, our environment, and our bank balance.

Recognising that Europe’s cities can no longer afford to rely on private vehicles for mobility needs, the 8th SUMP Award encourages planning authorities to promote and plan for active modes. In addition to flexibility, walking and cycling have many other benefits, such as social and economic accessibility, reliability, a low environmental footprint, and a positive impact on health.

The SUMP Award is presented together with the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK awards, and honours local authorities that have developed a SUMP that satisfies the diverse transport needs of people and businesses, whilst improving quality of life.

Applications will be accepted from European local and regional public authorities that have legal competence in developing and implementing a SUMP on their territory.

Happy World Bicycle Day!

3 June 2019

Today, 3 June, is the United Nations’ (UN) World Bicycle Day. It is a day to encourage UN Member States to include bicycle transit in their mobility policies, plans and projects.

Cycling is low emissions, affordable, and can improve riders’ health. Bicycles have even been associated with other benefits, including as a means of accessing education and healthcare, and as fostering social engagement and creativity. A 2018 study even found that European cities could avoid up to 10,000 premature deaths by expanding cycling networks.

In addition, cities that promote walking and cycling over private vehicles have also been found to be more attractive, with less congestion and a higher quality of life.

This EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK puts the spotlight on safe walking and cycling and the ways active mobility can benefit our health, environment, and bank balances. So this September why not #WalkWithUs and experience the benefits for yourself!
