EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK
Opening day event:
On Monday, September 16, 2024, the opening of the European Mobility Week started with a march with the participation of the protocol. Artistic painting of the public transport bus was done in the city square. A painting called "I'm Designing My Bus" was made with the children. Bicycle training was given to citizens who did not know how to ride a bicycle. We will encourage our citizens to walk more and we asked their opinions through a survey. In this way, we involved the public in the planning process for a future mobility option or policy change. We invited the public to enjoy public life by entertaining them.

Survey Study and Pedestrianisation
Denizli Metropolitan Municipality aims to involve citizens in the planning process through survey studies. Enverpaşa Street and Çamlık Boulevard, which are candidates for permanent change and where heavy private vehicle traffic is observed, were closed to traffic for a month as part of the pedestrianization trial. At the same time, citizens participating in the survey were informed about the planning efforts during this period. We placed boards at several locations in the city where citizens could write their opinions and questions. Citizens were able to directly express their requests to the municipality on these boards. These boards will serve as a guide for decision-makers in upcoming planning efforts and seminars.

Live Performance - Bus Painting and Mural Art
This year, as Denizli Metropolitan Municipality, we invited citizens to public spaces by harnessing the power of art. As part of this initiative, we painted a public transport bus and a transformer. The artist who painted the bus used the freedom of colors to depict figures representing the universality of public transport services provided by Denizli Metropolitan Municipality. The bus features figures of elderly people, young individuals, people with disabilities, and cyclists. We painted the transformer together with the citizens. This wall predominantly displays figures unique to Denizli, along with silhouettes of children and public transportation vehicles incorporated into the design. After the bus painting was completed, it continued to serve in public transportation.

"Discovering My Bus" event
We are aware that the information given to children at a young age is not forgotten and is very valuable. Therefore, on September 17th and 19th, we organized the "Discovering My Bus" event at two kindergartens. This orientation event was conducted with 5-6 year-old students who will graduate from kindergarten and start primary school at the end of the educational period.

Yoga and Zumba Day
Yoga and Zumba events serve as tools to attract our citizens to public spaces. The key aspect is encouraging participants to arrive by public transport, bike, or on foot. To promote this, we emphasize the importance of sustainable transportation systems when inviting citizens to the event areas and strengthen our public transport network to encourage its use. We are also working to enhance the connections of pedestrian pathways to facilitate walking access.

Pedestrianisation
Çamlık Boulevard and Enverpaşa Street are two roads in Denizli where heavy private vehicle traffic is observed. Alongside these roads, on-street parking is visible throughout the day, and it is not uncommon to encounter vehicles occupying the sidewalks. As part of European Mobility Week, both of these busy streets were closed to private vehicle traffic for one month. Enverpaşa Street was closed to private vehicles starting from September 16th, while Çamlık Boulevard was closed every Sundays from September 22nd as part of the Car-Free Day events.

This initiative provides a testing environment for these two roads, which are planned for permanent pedestrianization. Surveys conducted with citizens and shopkeepers after the pedestrianization, along with social media comments, indicate that a significant majority of the public is satisfied with the implementation and requests that the streets remain permanently closed.

With the permanent closure of these roads, they will be transformed into more comfortable and livable spaces supported by urban furniture and green areas. Urban design efforts are currently ongoing to support this transformation. Work will continue throughout the year to expand these initiatives across the city.

To be decided
We closed the busiest street in Denizli to vehicle traffic, and various events were held as part of the Car-Free Day event. We organized activities such as art workshops, mural art, a bike tour, children's events, a children's bike track, an art exhibition, street animal adoption initiatives, a public transport survey, boards for citizens to write their thoughts, live DJ performances, trio music performances, Zumba, and painting activities.

By transforming a heavily trafficked street into a public space, we effectively eliminated the distinction between the road and the sidewalk. The street we closed on September 22nd provided us with a testing environment, and both shopkeepers and citizens loved the pedestrianization efforts.

One important aspect of our work was explaining to citizens the improvements we are making in public transport routes through a week-long survey. By increasing the distance between public transport stops, we aim to shorten travel times and reduce carbon emissions through fuel savings. We shared with citizens that we plan to add pedestrian stops between the bus stops we spaced out. This way, citizens will have access to a faster transportation system and the opportunity to rest while walking.

We shared with this project to citizens and showcased a prototype of the pedestrian stop. Citizens experienced the pedestrian stop and shared their thoughts and opinions with us. Throughout the week, we enjoyed spending time in public spaces through these activities.
These events and planning efforts will not be limited to the dates of September 16-22; they will continue throughout the year. We will keep living our city by utilizing sustainable transportation systems.
