Further info
Mersin Metropolitan Municipality is implementing and promoting permanent measures to foster sustainable urban mobility. The city currently has 153.5 km of round-trip bicycle lanes, with a target of adding 270 km more by 2035. The “1 car–12 bicycle parking station” initiative and the “Pedal Safely – 30 km speed limit” campaign are promoted and implemented to encourage cycling and road safety.
In total, 18 Electric public transportation buses ( with 10 charge units - 400 KW) equipped with bicycle racks and accessible features have been integrated into the fleet, while metro and tram projects are under preparation. Existing infrastructure – pedestrian crossings, wider pavements, ramps, tactile surfaces and acoustic signaling systems – is being continuously upgraded and expanded to ensure safer and more inclusive mobility. The TEKSIN (helpline) mobile application and Smart Transport Systems provide citizens with reliable, real-time travel information.
To strengthen inclusiveness and affordability, the municipality offers discounted fares for students and distance-based fares system where passengers only pay for the distance travelled. Through Public Transportation Smart Card, citizens can benefit from distance-based fares and the use of integrated transportation modes. Seasonal service adjustments, regional cooperation in transportation with the neighboring city, and stakeholder consultations known as the “We Have a Say in Mersin” meetings further enhance accessibility, equity, and citizen engagement.
