The area of study includes Hurlu Street, located in Yeşilyurt Neighborhood, Başiskele District, Kocaeli Province, where the entrance and exit gates of Yuvacık Levent Kırca Oya Başar Kindergarten, Primary School, and Middle School are situated. There are a total of 980 students at Levent Kırca Oya Başar Kindergarten, Primary School, and Middle School. Access to Yuvacık Levent Kırca Oya Başar Primary School is provided via Hurlu Street. Due to the increasing population in the area, the school will operate on a double-shift system in the coming terms, doubling the current number of students and increasing pedestrian traffic.
Given the high volume of student traffic on the street and the heavy flow of traffic on the main road, it is essential to ensure student safety. When exiting Hurlu Street onto the main road, visibility is restricted, and the slope at the entrance of the school on Hurlu Street poses a safety risk. Additionally, the lack of sidewalks for students and parents when exiting the school creates a danger for their safety.
In order to eliminate these safety risks, the Marmara Municipalities Union, Superpool, the Global Designing Cities Initiative, and the Department of Transportation collaborated to transform city streets into pedestrian- and child-friendly public spaces. Within this scope, the Streets Are Changing – School Street Project was developed for Hurlu Street, where the entrance and exit gates of the Levent Kırca-Oya Başar School complex are located. The planned arrangements are as follows:
- Closing Hurlu Street to vehicle traffic while maintaining emergency access.
- Drawing pedestrian crosswalk lines on Nur Street and Levent Kırca Street.
