Galway City Council organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2012, taking into account the annual theme.

Galway City Council in conjunction with its support partners namely NUI, Galway, Galway University College Hospital, An Taisce Green Schools and Galway Health Cities Initiative will implement a coordinated programme of actions in support of sustainable travel, which focusses in particular on the Westside area of Galway City. Actions to be implemented include: (i) New pro Bike/ Bus and Walking themed awareness campaign using a range of different channels including advertising at bus shelters, City Centre litter bins and local media (ii) Installation of Street Art (iii) Free bike training for 360 schoolchildren (iv) Distribution of bike and bus vouchers to the target group (v) Bike Repair Workshops (vi) Health checks with specially designed cards in NUI, Galway in the Westside area and in Galway University College Hospital (vii) Critical Mass cycles with schoolchildren amongst a range of other actions.

Permanent measure implemented in the Westside area of Galway City include the rollout of 1.6km of inbound and outbound bus lanes along the Seamus Quirke Road in Galway City, new inbound and outbound cycle lanes adjacent to the bus lanes and five new pedestrian crossings which replace the previous 2 crossings along this pivotal route which serves a significant residential area in the Westside of Galway City.
