From September 16 to October 11, the self-driving bus testing its suitability for the conditions of Viimsi is provided by the Estonian company Auve Tech OÜ, which specializes in the creation and development of autonomous transport systems.

The bus does not have a driver, but it is controlled by advanced technology, which is why driving the bus is safe and the bus itself is also safe for other road users. The electric bus is equipped with different types of sensors that monitor the surrounding objects and their movement. The bus moves at a slow speed on a pre-mapped track and does not pose a threat to other road users. The trial period provides an opportunity to gain the necessary experience
During the test period, the bus moves along the route Vardi tee – Nurme taiik – Hundi tee – Põldheina tee – Tammepollu tee parking lot. The selection of the route has taken into account the area where there is currently no public transport, but where there are roads with calmer traffic and reduced speed limits. The bus serves those interested for six hours every day: in the morning from 7 am to 10 am and in the afternoon from 2 pm to 5 pm.

With the autonomous bus pilot project, it is hoped to pave the way for innovative solutions that could make the municipality's public transport system more efficient and environmentally friendly in the future.

The period of the test remains the time when the European Mobility Week takes place, in the framework of which special attention is paid to environmentally friendly and safety-enhancing transport solutions. Viimsi's interest is to find out with this test whether it would be possible to use autonomous buses in Viimsi and what should be taken into account in the municipality when introducing them
