Youth in Motion – Heraklion Attica
With the motto “Youth in Motion – Heraklion Attica”, the Municipality brings the European Mobility Week spirit directly to the classroom. Young students become ambassadors of change, discovering fun, healthy and eco-friendly ways to move around their city – walking, cycling, carpooling, and using public transport. Through interactive dialogue and inspiration, we empower the next generation to lead the shift towards greener, safer and more inclusive mobility. Heraklion Attica moves forward, hand in hand with its youth.

Further info
The Municipality of Heraklion Attica is committed to creating a safer, greener and more inclusive city through a set of permanent measures. As part of its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, new bicycle lanes and greenways are being planned to expand the cycling network, along with the installation of charging points for e-bikes. During European Mobility Week, the Municipality will implement improvements in pedestrian infrastructure, including new pavements, safer crossings, wheelchair ramps, and tactile pavements, to ensure better accessibility for all citizens.
In parallel, new bicycle parking facilities will be installed near schools, squares, and public transport stops, making active mobility more convenient. Awareness campaigns will promote the use of public transport, carpooling, and pedestrian-friendly areas, highlighting recent efforts to remove architectonic barriers and improve universal accessibility. These measures aim not only to improve daily mobility but also to foster a long-term culture of sustainable and inclusive transport in Heraklion Attica.

On Car-Free Day, the Municipality of Heraklion Attica visited a local secondary school to engage with students about their right to cleaner air and a better quality of life. Young people were encouraged to speak to their parents about the need for oxygen, health, and freedom from endless hours in the back seat of cars. Through dialogue and inspiration, students were motivated to embrace alternative ways of moving – walking, cycling, public transport – and to become active voices for a more sustainable and people-friendly city.
