Young Cyclists for Sustainable Mobility | Cycling Bus
Two main Primary Schools of Heraklion (19th and 48th) will organize a “Bike to School” activity, encouraging students to commute by bicycle.
Following the cycling activity, the Heraklion Traffic Police Department will conduct an educational session on road safety and responsible travel behavior. This initiative is directly connected to the 2025 theme “Mobility for Everyone” and seeks to raise awareness, promote inclusiveness, and, above all, enable children to experience first-hand—by actually cycling to reach their school—the benefits of this mode of transport, as well as the essential safety elements they must observe in order to remain protected and to embrace cycling as a regular travel choice.

Walking the Walls: guided tour of Heraklion Venetian Walls
This guided cultural walk, led by archaeologist Kalia Nikolidaki of the Municipality of Heraklion, will take participants along the recently renovated section of the city’s Venetian Walls, from Vigla to the Martinengo bastion. Through a mild walking tour, participants will explore the historical and archaeological significance of Heraklion’s most iconic monument.

At the same time, the event will highlight the recent works carried out to improve accessibility, including the upgrading of walking corridors, the installation of improved ramps, and the creation of smoother rolling surfaces. Enhanced accessibility features for persons with disabilities have been integrated into the monument, ensuring that a landmark once difficult to approach is now more inclusive and welcoming to a wider public. In addition, an upcoming intervention will be presented, focusing on the improvement of accessibility for visually impaired visitors, further strengthening the commitment to make Heraklion’s Venetian Walls a universally accessible cultural route.

Treasure Hunt: Mobility for Everyone
Α special Treasure Hunt for Children will take place at Georgiadis Park in Heraklion, organized in collaboration with the Treasure Hunt Teams Association " Allegri". The game’s scenario is inspired by this year’s theme “Mobility for Everyone” and will include a wide range of questions and riddles designed to raise awareness among children about sustainable and inclusive mobility.

Through playful challenges, participants will explore topics such as the “3-30-300” rule for urban green spaces, the comparison between the cost of travelling by public transport, private car, bikes, walking... They will also reflect on the barriers faced in everyday mobility and consider whether children’s movements are overly dependent on their parents’ cars—and how things could be different. This activity combines fun with learning, engaging young citizens in discovering more equitable, sustainable, and accessible ways to move in their city.

Play-Streets – Playing in the Heart of the City
As a flagship event of the European Mobility Week 2025 in Heraklion, part of the central Demokratias Avenue will temporarily CLOSE to motor traffic, transforming the space in front of the Venizelos monument into a lively open-air playground. From 14:30 to 17:00 on Saturday, citizens of all ages will be invited to reclaim the street and take part in a variety of sports and games, including volleyball, basketball, tennis, table tennis, and chess.

The activity is organized with the support of the sports clubs “Iraklio–OAA” and “Cretan Asteras,” whose members will guide participants throughout the event. Open to children, families, and all residents, this initiative promotes physical activity and community interaction, while also highlights the potential of urban spaces to serve people rather than cars. By reclaiming a section of Demokratias Avenue—already renovated in part and scheduled for further urban regeneration—this event symbolizes the city’s commitment to sustainable mobility and a more inclusive, people-centered urban environment.
