Further info
As this year’s theme is road safety, the municipality of Quito has started to work with schools to implement ‘Road Safety Brigades’, designed to decrease the number of car accidents happening around schools involving students. The brigades will be composed of a mixture of teachers and students (freely chosen by each school) that will help students crossing busy roads. A big training event for the brigades will be held on Wednesday 21 of September, as part of the mobility week. Safety road’s kits have started to be delivered to schools and their work will continue throughout the school year starting this year (September).
There have been two boulevards designed and recently opened where the main purpose was to widen pedestrian and cycle paths, reducing private car’s space, in order to encourage walking and cycling by improving their environment. One is located at the city´s north and the other on the south.
Car-free day
Quito carries out a Car-free day 2011 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.
