Riga City Council's “Let’s Step Together” Steps Challenge for Riga Schools
During European Mobility Week, the Riga City Council also invites students, teachers, friends and family members to get active with a steps challenge!

The Steps Challenge will take place on the “Walk15” mobile app.
All teams (schools) that complete the target steps during mobility week, symbolically walking around Latvia, will be entered into a prize draw to win the grand prize – a guest performance by illusionist Pecolli at their school! The municipality will announce the winning school on 23 September.

Teachers, family members and friends are also invited to join the school teams, as their steps will help the school team achieve a higher score! Walking is an opportunity to spend time in nature, get moving and inspire others!

Public transport rides full of positive emotions with LLC (SIA) “Rīgas satiksmes” and “VIVI” public transport
In order to make travelling in public transport more pleasant and to thank public transport passengers for environmentally friendly commuting, on 20 and 21 September, both LLC (SIA) Rīgas satiksme and JSC (AS) Pasažieru vilciens (VIVI) will organise special “positive emotion” routes in public transport, where a cartoonist, a smile expert and other pleasant surprises are planned. In total, there will be six rides on Rīgas satiksmes public transport – on tram No. 1, bus No. 3, trolleybus No. 4, and six rides on
on JSC (AS) Pasažieru vilciens (VIVI) trains (zones A and B). There will also be a quiz game on board and passengers will be able to test their knowledge about mobility and public transport in Riga.

Public transport passengers are encouraged to be positive and open-minded!

In addition, on Saturday, 20 September, a DJ will entertain and energise passengers at one of the public transport stops in the centre of Riga.

As part of the European Mobility Week, on 20 and 21 September, sections of Dzirnavu and Antonijas streets in Riga will be turned into pedestrian streets for two days.

Such initiatives - temporarily closing streets and dedicating them to pedestrians - are taking place in many places across Europe, supporting local businesses and cafés, as well as making urban spaces lively and accessible to residents.

As Marta Kotello, Chairperson of the Riga City Council Traffic and Transport Committee, points out: “In European cities, such initiatives have become an annual tradition, allowing the streets to become a common meeting place and walking area for a moment. By testing temporary pedestrian streets, we can learn and observe how a particular street could become a permanent space for pedestrians and enrich the life of Riga. In the future, we will organise such events more frequently in the streets of neighbourhoods outside the centre of Riga. We will do this in close cooperation with local neighbourhood communities. I invite Riga residents and visitors to take a leisurely stroll through the quiet centre of Riga at the weekend, admire the city's unique architecture and enjoy the hospitality of local businesses.”

The section of Dzirnavu Street from K. Valdemāra to Antonijas Street and the section of Antonijas Street from Elizabetes to Dzirnavu Street will be pedestrian streets from Saturday, 20 September starting from 6:00 until Sunday, 21 September till 17:00.

To ensure safety and order, traffic on the designated sections will be regulated by the Riga Municipal Police.
