Activities within the week Activities within the week

Comune di Bitonto organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2008, taking into account the annual theme.

All week
In line with what has already been achieved with students, the actions planned for the European Mobility Week 2008 have the following objectives:

- to inform about the extent, variety and the danger of fine particles and gases emitted by vehicles for urban and individual transport (cars, motorcycles);
- to raise awareness about the need for sustainable urban mobility - cycling and pedestrian – in order to limit the emissions of toxic gases in the air;
- to convey the importance of the air quality for the health of citizens, especially the weaker ones(the elderly, children);
- to test and show techniques for air monitoring (lichenous biomonitoring, monitoring through use of passive samples);
- to inform the citizens about regional and provincial activities regarding the air monitoring (positioning of units for the detection of air quality);
- to illustrate the practices and techniques of mobility management to reduce the emission of toxic gases when citizens go to work.

Further info
From March 2008 CEA has started a service bike sharing in Bitonto. Moreover, the Municipality has been urged about the creation of a bike path: this project has been funded by the European Community and the construction will start in September.
After the restoration of the Angevin tower, the Municipality will create a pedestrian zone near the historic centre in order to raise the awareness - through workshops and forums - about the need to activate a restricted traffic zone in the historic centre.
In agreement with the company that manages the public service, the Municipality has increased the number of the bus stops of the urban transport and placed special totems to indicate the stops.
The Ferrotramviaria, which manages the public transport by rail, has already increased the number of the runs from Bitonto to Bari, while on solicitation of CEA, and in accordance with a regional directive wagons to transport bikes will be implemented within this year.
