Detailed description (English): ConBici, through its Health and Environment Area, is once again promoting the action To School Without Smoke. This initiative highlights the benefits of active and sustainable mobility by comparing air quality around schools on days with and without traffic. The project is based on the citizen science methodology developed within Cycling with Clean Air and aims to raise awareness of the health risks of car-based school mobility.
With the collaboration of Murcia en Bici and other volunteer groups, as well as local schools such as CEIP La Arboleda (Santiago y Zaraiche, Murcia) and its parents’ associations, the action will measure fine particle pollution (PM2.5) with the support of ConBici’s air quality monitors. Volunteers will help schools carry out the measurements, while ConBici provides technical guidance, training activities, and communication support.
The measurements will be taken on two consecutive mornings, coinciding with school entry: one representative of a traffic-free day (Sunday 21/09/25) and one of a typical school day with traffic (Monday 22/09/25). Results will illustrate the clear impact of motor traffic on children’s exposure to pollution.
Awareness-raising activities will be organized in schools before, during, or after European Mobility Week, reinforcing the message that walking and cycling are healthier, safer, and more sustainable ways to get to school. This joint action across several Spanish cities seeks to make children’s right to breathe clean air visible and undeniable.
