Detailed description (English): "Bikes for Cities" is a citizen participation initiative that comprises both a data analysis tool and an online community promoting safer, more accessible spaces for alternative mobility. Through data visualizations, the project offers a positive outlook on improving urban infrastructure, identifying areas in need of attention, and suggesting actionable and realistic improvements to make cities more bike-friendly.
This initiative began as a personal exploration of open data related to alternative mobility in several Spanish cities and how it relates with on-the-ground observations of everyday issues. Initially driven by curiosity, the project quickly evolved into a potential tool for change. Conversations with the municipality of León confirmed the potential to refine and develop its utility.
The project not only seeks to inspire changes in urban planning but also to motivate citizens to take an active role in creating a more sustainable future. With the goal of building a community where dialogue and action for urban transformation, a social media account for "Bikes for Cities" was launched on 07/09/2024. Here, we will regularly share analysis results, propose data-driven changes based on smart cities' open data, and feature information on mobility initiatives, as well as interviews with everyday cyclists highlighting their experiences and benefits.
Objectives: Our goal is to raise public awareness on the benefits of cycling as a means of transport and to promote its use by identifying current difficulties and proposing realistic effective solutions.
We also want to support local governments promote green mobility providing data-driven tools and analysis resulting in a comprehensive understanding of mobility networks and habits.
