Detailed description (English): As part of the European Mobility Week and World Car Free Day (September 22), the association Ruedas Redondas will carry out a citizen science activity to highlight the effects of traffic on air quality around schools. Volunteers will conduct two comparative air pollution measurements in Málaga: the first on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., a non-school day with no traffic; and the second on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., coinciding with World Car Free Day and school start time, when traffic levels are at their peak around school areas.
Measurements will be taken with a portable PM2.5 particulate matter monitor, one of the most harmful pollutants linked to urban air quality and health risks, provided by the local group Ruedas Redondas. The activity will take place near two schools in different neighborhoods of Málaga, with the aim of showing the contrast between a day with heavy traffic and a day with reduced circulation.
Afterwards, the results will be included in a joint report together with other Spanish cities, as part of the national campaign Cycling with Clean Air, promoted by the Health and Environment Department of ConBici with the collaboration of Ruedas Redondas. This initiative seeks to raise awareness among citizens and local authorities about the need to protect school environments from traffic pollution and to move towards healthier, safer, and more sustainable cities.
Detailed description (original language): Con motivo de la Semana Europea de la Movilidad y del Día Mundial Sin Coches (22 de septiembre), la asociación Ruedas Redondas llevará a cabo una actividad de ciencia ciudadana para visibilizar los efectos del tráfico en la calidad del aire alrededor de los centros escolares. Voluntarios de la asociación realizarán dos mediciones comparativas de contaminación atmosférica en Málaga: la primera el domingo 21 de septiembre de 2025 a las 9:00 h, jornada no lectiva y con ausencia de tráfico; y la segunda el lunes 22 de septiembre de 2025 a las 9:00 h, coincidiendo con el Día Mundial Sin Coches y con la entrada lectiva, cuando se concentra el mayor flujo de vehículos en el entorno escolar.
Las mediciones se efectuarán con un medidor portátil de material particulado PM2.5, contaminante atmosférico responsable de gran parte de los problemas de salud asociados a la polución urbana, facilitado por el grupo local Ruedas Redondas. La actividad se desarrollará en las inmediaciones de dos centros educativos de Málaga, con el objetivo de evidenciar la diferencia entre un día con tráfico intenso y otro con circulación reducida.
Posteriormente, los resultados se integrarán en un informe colectivo junto con otras ciudades españolas, dentro de la campaña estatal Cycling with Clean Air, impulsada por el Área de Salud y Medioambiente de ConBici, con la colaboración de Ruedas Redondas. Esta iniciativa busca sensibilizar a la ciudadanía y a las administraciones sobre la necesidad de proteger los entornos escolares de la contaminación del tráfico y avanzar hacia ciudades más saludables, seguras.
