Detailed description (English): A “BOTXO” THAT IS FLATTER EVERY DAY
BOTXO: In the vernacular it means hole which, in a city like Bilbao, is used to name a municipality that is a flat hole, around the banks of the estuary, but surrounded by mountains with high inclinations at different levels. A city that was not very sustainable for its citizens from the point of view of mobility: steep ramps, neighborhoods divided into heights, significant percentage of people are elderly.
Today, Bilbao is THE CITY WITH THE MOST ELEVATORS IN SPAIN.
An activity that began in 1983 and that, in 2023, is an option used by more than 19 million people/year (13,6 million during 2024 -until August-).
Today Bilbao have 70 vertical elevators (with the forecast to increase by 7 more during 2024-25) and 20 automatic stairs or ramps. Public and free systems with 24 hours of daily operation.
Its maintenance and management is absorbed by the Artxanda Funicular Railway company, which provides service of access to high of Mount Artxanda, as part of its central objective: to facilitate movement of the people.

BOTXO: En lengua vernácula significa agujero que, en una ciudad como Bilbao, sirve para denominar a un
municipio que es un agujero plano alrededor de los márgenes de la ría, pero rodeado de montañas con elevadas
inclinaciones en sus diferentes cotas.
Una ciudad que resultaba poco sostenible para su ciudadanía desde el punto de vista de la movilidad: fuertes rampas, barrios divididos en alturas, significativo porcentaje de personas de edad avanzada…
En el marco de la Semana de la Movilidad se han presentado los datos de los sistemas de elevación vertical que hacen de Bilbao LA CIUDAD CON MÁS ELEVADORES DE ESPAÑA.
Una actividad que comenzó en el año 1983 y que, en 2023, es una opción usada por más de 19 millones de personas/año (Más de 13,6 millones durante 2024 –hasta agosto-).
Sistemas públicos y gratuitos con 24 horas de funcionamiento diario y que hoy cuenta con 70 ascensores verticales (con la previsión de incrementarse en 7 más durante 2024-25) y 20 escaleras o rampas automáticas.
Su mantenimiento es absorbido por el la empresa Funicular de Artxanda, que, además, presta servicio de acceso al alto del monte Artxanda, como parte de su objetivo central: facilitar el desplazamiento de las personas.
